Biographical / Historical
Built in 1926 by Joseph Urban, with key alterations by Marion Sims Wyeth, the Bath and Tennis Club was designed with the Southwestern Spanish Mission style in mind, including cloisters, broad terraces, and tall beam ceilings, with key dramatic details indicative of Joseph Urban’s style on Palm Beach, which has come to be known as “Urbanesque.” The club’s design is considered unique due to Urban’s adaptation of the traditionally rectilinear Mission Style to fit the functions of the club’s location, curving along the oceanfront with two tall stucco towers, flanked by projecting wings on either side to relate the interiors to oceanfront views. Designed for convenience, spaciousness, and function, the Bath and Tennis club is one of the most prominent and exclusive private clubs in Palm Beach. The construction was financed by E.F. Hutton, whose wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, served as the original owner of the neighboring estate Mar-A-Lago. The club was designated 4/17/1980.
