Biographical / Historical
Worth Avenue, considered one of the most elite shopping districts in the region, was built between 1919-2005. Beginning with the construction of the Everglades Club by Addison Mizner in 1919, the storefronts along Worth Avenue have moved in a west-east orientation from the Intercoastal to the ocean. Notable architectural styles include Mediterranean Revival, best showcased by the Mizner designed Everglades Club, Via Mizner, and Via Parigi, Art Moderne, as seen in the facade of 236 Worth Avenue, and International, seen in the Worth Avenue Building. Prominent architects who designed buildings along the street include Addison Mizner, Treanor & Fatio, and John Stetson.
Due to the west-east orientation of the development, Worth Avenue serves as a unique time capsule of the most popular architectural design styles throughout Palm Beach history, showing a shift from Mediterranean Revival in the 1920s, to Art Moderne in the 1940s, International in the 1950s, and back to Mediterranean Revival in the modern age. The oceanfront side of Worth Avenue is marked by a clock tower dedicated in 2010, which serves both as a means of showing drivers the location of the street from Ocean Boulevard, and as a commemoration of the Palm Beach Pier, which was demolished in 1969. In December of 1982, there was a proposal to designate Worth Avenue as a historic district, but it was rejected in 1983.
