Biographical / Historical
Hope Annan (1932-2020) was a long-time resident of Palm Beach. Born in New York, she graduated Cum Laude from Hannah More Academy in Maryland. In 1960, she married her first husband A. Atwater Kent Jr. at the Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach. She greatly enjoyed being involved in her community and was a member of the Colony Club, Acorn Club, Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Everglades Club, and Bath and Tennis Club, as well as serving as President of the Garden Club of Palm Beach, Trustee of the Society of Four Arts and the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. A dedicated Preservation Foundation volunteer, she filled the Preservation Foundation archives with histories and photographs of Palm Beach houses.
The Garden Club of Palm Beach is a non-profit organization founded in 1928, with a mission focused "on horticulture, the environment, conservation and civic improvements." The Garden Club aided in creating the 1929 Plan of Palm Beach, as well as maintaining the Society of the Four Arts Demonstration Gardens, and hosting an Annual Flower Show, which began in 1929. The Garden Club was granted membership to the Garden Club of America in 1931, and has assisted the Town of Palm Beach with multiple landscape improvement plans and other public services relating to gardens and horticulture in Palm Beach. The annual House and Garden Day is currently held on the first Sunday in March, and serves as the main fundraiser for the Club, allowing members of the public to tour distinguished homes and gardens throughout Palm Beach.
