Scope and Contents

The Town of Palm Beach Historic Site Survey Records contains the proposal and complete Historic Building Site Survey conducted jointly by the Town of Palm Beach and the Historic Palm Beach County Preservation Board in May 1981. Included as well are correspondence and newspaper clippings discussing proposals for grant funding for landmarking and historic preservation initiatives in the Town of Palm Beach; the Historic Site Survey is one of the projects listed for funding. Records also contain Historic Site Surveys for the Town of Palm Beach dated 1997, 2004, and 2010. Surveys were conducted and written by Research Atlantica, Inc., and include information on historic and landmarked buildings, descriptions of survey methodology and criteria for historically significant structures, recommendations for historic preservation, as well as guidance and instruction for grant funding and projects through the State of Florida. The records also contain a 1997 Comprehensive Plan Update for the Town of Palm Beach, with information on land use, transportation, housing, and infrastructure in Palm Beach.

All records within the collection were compiled for, or authored by, the Planning, Zoning, and Building department of the Town of Palm Beach.

Biographical / Historical

The Town of Palm Beach passed Ordinance 1-79, the Landmarks Preservation Ordinance, in 1979. This ordinance established the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as appoint the Commission with the role of identifying significant structures, subjecting them to a set of objective criteria, and designating them worthy as historic landmarks in the Town of Palm Beach. The Historic Palm Beach County Preservation Board was an agency within the Florida Department of State operating within Palm Beach County. It worked jointly with the Town of Palm Beach to implement the Palm Beach Historic Buildings Survey Project, a grant-funded program to identify and protect buildings in Palm Beach constructed prior to 1947.

Housed within the Town of Palm Beach, the Planning, Zoning, and Building department provides municipal and public services for the Town of Palm Beach, including "implementing the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and municipal Zoning Code, providing staff assistance to the Architectural and Landmark Preservation Commissions, managing construction-related permitting, issuing business tax receipt licensing, and archiving building records." Research Atlantica, Inc. is a research organization founded in 1989 by historian and preservationist Dr. Jane S. Day. Other members include Teresa Van Dyke, Susan P. Krassy, and Sandra L. Norman, PhD. With grant funding from the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Divison of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, Research Atlantica, Inc. conducted Historic Site Surveys for the Town of Palm Beach in 1997, 2004, and 2010, recording historic sites, identifying architecural information and landmarks with historic value, and providing recommendations for historic preservation initiatives to the Town of Palm Beach's Planning, Zoning, & Building Department.
