Biography

Henry Flagler was an industrialist known as one of the founders of Standard Oil alongside John D. Rockefeller, and the fouder of the East Coast Railway. A major figure in the American Gilded Age, Flagler developed large parts of Florida, including the creation of the Flagler Hotel Complex, which included the Hotel Ponce De Leon and Hotel Alcazar in St. Augustine, Florida, the Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, and the Royal Palm Hotel in Miami, Florida. Flagler owned Whitehall, an estate designed by Carrere and Hastings, with his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan, from 1902 until his death in 1913.
