Biographical / Historical
Built over the course of 18 months from 1900-1902, this Beaux-Arts Style residence was designed by the New York based architecture firm Carrere & Hastings, who also designed Flagler’s Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, FL. The estate of Henry Flagler and his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan. The design was meant to invoke a Temple of Apollo, and Greco-Roman imagery and motifs are found throughout the residence, as is the influence of French aristocracy.
The site was transformed into a hotel, the Whitehall Hotel, in 1925 with the construction of a 10-story addition to the lakefront side of the building. The hotel grew to one of the most popular in Palm Beach, but was slated for demolition in 1959. The building was saved by Jean Flagler Matthews, a granddaughter of Henry Flagler. The 10-story hotel addition was demolished in 1963, and the residence was re-opened to the public as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum shortly thereafter. The Flagler Museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places 12/05/1972, and was landmarked by the Town of Palm beach July 11, 1979.
