Biography
Gustav A. Maass was born in New Orleans and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1917 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Upon returning to Birmingham he directed the architectural department of the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company, a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Company; and later worked for the firm of Warren, Knight and Davis designing public and commercial buildings. In 1922 Maass arrived in West Palm Beach and became the chief draftsman for the firm of Harvey and Clarke. Henry Stephen Clarke was one of Maass’ teachers at the University of Pennsylvania. The firm were architects for the 21 Seaboard Railway Stations on the east and west coast of Florida. Maass is well known for his association with John L. Volk; a partnership that lasted from 1927 to 1935 was headquartered in Phipps Plaza. Maass designed projects in Palm Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. Gustav Maass maintained an active practice in Palm Beach where he lived in a house he designed on Algoma Road until his death in 1964.
